Activity Porn

My favorite past-time during my recovery has become activity observation — watching and reading about people running, climbing, and generally accomplishing things physically. Seeing people make it to the top of a mountain or run a marathon — heck, even walk without a limp down the street — has become my porn. I lust after the ability to do these things like a hormone-raging teenager.  I ravage through Runner’s World magazine and the mountaineering books at REI like a teen goes through a freshly discovered batch of Playboy.

After watching the Discovery Channel’s series Everest: Beyond the Limis, I realized that I can do more than dream of participating in these amazing endeavors and accomplishments.  Watching and reading about them actually allows me to partake in the activities. In addition to distracting me from my current situatio, watching actually fills me with emotions similar to the ones I would experience if I was actually the one trail running or skiing down pristine slopes. After watching a movie like Ultramarathon Man, I actually feel a portion of the exhiliration, joy, and even fatigue that I would feel if I was the one running the marathons (well, running 50 marathons in 50 days would leave me dead). I just hope all of this activity porn will lead to the real thing one day. Hell, I might even get lucky and end up in the activity porn business myself one day.

Nice blog and thanks for the Twitter follow. If you’re into reading running-type books, check out Born to Run by Christopher McDougall — it’s a great read.
