It Just Does

I groaned as I moved because my back began to burn. I asked my 3 1/2 year-old daughter, Coralyne, “Why does my back hurt?” She replied, “Because it does.” I think that’s the best summary I’ve heard yet for why I have to endure constant pain. I keep trying to figure out how this could […]

Exercising My Right. And Left.

I have seen my physical therapist for 4 times and have made some progress, However, the pain still burns after a couple of minutes walking, and only after 30 seconds of sitting. I learned that the area on the side of what I was calling my leg is actually referred to as my buttocks, at […]

Risking It All

I’ve taken up a pretty bad habit of late. A potentially lethal one at that. Like Bear Grylls puts himself in danger’s way on the Discovery Channel’s Man vs. Wild, I have begun to put myself in dangerous situations. I disregard the warning signs over and over again. I just get caught up in the […]

Need a Hand With That?

I never thought I’d be accepting a Safeway checker’s offer to get someone to help me out with my bags. The other day, after making a run for milk, bread, and peanut butter to our nearby Safeway grocery store and checking out, I realized I probably shouldn’t carry the few items to the car. I […]

Bean There, Drank That

I’ve visited quite a number of Peet’s locations over the years. My friends and colleagues joke that I have an internal Peet’s locator, as I always seem to know where the closest Peet’s is. I seek them out on my travels and love to discover newer locations, which usually have more comfortable seating, better designs, […]

A Better Daddy

My older daughter, 7, put my sweatshirt and baseball cap on this evening and explained to my younger daughter that she was daddy. Then, realizing the agility required of her for the activity she was about to perform, quickly added, “a better daddy.” While I know she meant a more active daddy, recovered from his […]

L5 Disc Herniation

So, the MRI showed that my fifth lumbar vertabra (L5), had an bit of the disc squeeze out (an extrusion) onto the sciatic nerve. The doctor explained that it was like having a piece of burning hot coal sitting on my nerve.

A Shuffle in the Mist

I got up early this morning after my CPAP maching filled me up with all the air it could. I basically floated out of bed. I swear, some mornings I am so filled with air that I begin to feel like I’m the blueberry boy from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Instead of letting […]

Learning to Walk Again

Turns out it doesn’t take long for the body to forget how to walk properly — especially when pain is still constant and present. I just got back from an appointment with my physical therapist and learned that I was walking “like I had a peg leg.” While it remains true that I shouldn’t ever […]
