My 3-year-old daughter was running the length of the house this afternoon. You should have seen the huge smile she had on her face. She was having so much fun practicing new forms – kicking her heels up high behind her, leaping forward in large strides, skipping. It reminded me how running is one of the first and longest joys of accomplishment we experience in life. What she then said to me shot pure inspiration directly into my heart, warming every corner of it with hope and determination. She looked at me from across the room and explained, “I’m practicing so that I can run with you when you get better, daddy.” She must have heard me talking with her 7-year-old sister about coming out running with me once my back heals after surgery. I replied to her, “I can’t wait to run with you, sweety.” I am going to do everything I can to make sure my girls continue to experience the joys that come with running freely, learning, expressing, and just being.
