On your mark, get set, take your shoes off!
I’m excited to share that I’ll be putting on a barefoot running class at my local CrossFit gym Saturday, August 21. I’m thrilled to have found a coach and gym owner who get the importance of barefoot running in helping improve running form and how returning to how they body was designed to be used is an excellent idea.
In this class we’re going to cover the foundational principles of barefoot running. The class is going to be very hands on (well, feet on, too, I suppose) with lots of interaction, practice, and feedback from one another.
It’s an added bonus to have an elite runner join us for this class, too. Brendon Mahoney, CrossFit San Mateo owner, is a world-class track and field runner and Inov8 sponsored athlete. Hearing his thoughts from personal experience and coaching other runners will be very valuable.

When It Is
August 21, 2010, from 10:30am to 12:00pm
What We’ll Cover
We’ll go over the fundamental principles of barefoot running and how to avoid the common pitfalls of when starting out barefoot or switching to minimal shoes (lighter shoes with no padding).
Who This Class is For
This class is for anyone interested in running or improving their running form. The only requirements are that you can run a few blocks at a leisurely pace and are willing to take off your shoes for some short exercises. You do not have to be an experienced runner nor do you need to have any prior barefoot walking or running experience. This class is designed for folks relatively inexperienced with running barefoot.
What To Bring
Besides an open mind and a willingness to step beyond your comfort zone a little, you should bring the following:
- Running Shoes – The lighter the better, but whatever you have as we’ll be running about 5 blocks to a nearby park.
- Workout Clothes – Something comfortable for running, such as shorts and a T-shirt.
- Water Bottle – You might want to bring some water in a container you can run with as we’ll be at the park for most of the 1.5 hours (unknown whether the water fountain will be working or not).
What You’ll Get
Perhaps the biggest thing you’ll walk away with is the understanding that you can actually run with less on your feet and even completely barefoot. In addition, you’ll also get the following:
- Specific steps you can take to improve your form.
- Exercises you can do to strengthen your feet.
- Awareness of how to avoid the mistakes most people make when they start running barefoot or in minimal shoes.
- A goodie bag of swag.
How to Register
The first 10 people will score a discounted rate of $40 – after that the price will go up to $60. Email me now to register. Here’s a link to CrossFit San Mateo’s post about the class.
