Invisible Shoes – First Attempt
Invisible Shoes Huarache Sandals I have to admit that I really, really wanted the Invisible Shoes huaraches to work out for me. I loved the idea of a thin-soled, open sandal. The idea of running with nothing more than a long shoe lace and bit of rubber under my feet sounded great. Unfortunately, my first […]

Kigo Footwear – Initial Review
Kigo who? I don’t remember exactly how I first heard of Kigo. I think it was on twitter. What caught my attention was their talk about barefoot running and the virtues of a minimalist shoe. The fact that I hadn’t heard of them made me even more curious. I contacted Kigo and heard back from […]

So Cool in Wool
Review of Icebreaker GT Run Gear It might come as a shock to you that to remain cool on the trail, or wherever you run, you might want to try wearing all wool. It certainly sounded counter-intuitive when I heard that Icebreaker makes performance gear out of merino wool. With images of thick, scratchy sweaters popping […]

Sweet EVOlution
Overview When Terra Plana asked if I would be willing to test and review a pair of their new EVO running shoes I was thrilled. I had been enjoying wearing the Aqua shoes they gave me almost every day since I received them last year. Now, with a shoe designed specifically for running, I couldn’t […]

Ten Fingers On Ice
Snow, ice, rocks, the smell of fresh pine, bright blue skies, soaring mountains, and the soft sound of Five Fingers running. Yep, that pretty much sums up my enjoyable Christmas Eve run in the San Gabriel Mountains between Los Angeles and Palm Springs. It was my first opportunity to run in the snow with my Vibram Five Fingers. The run was nothing short of spectacular. Well, except my toes ended up pretty much frozen after 3 miles and 1,300 feet of elevation gain.

You Won’t Run Barefoot
The reason so many people bristle at the idea of running without shoes on has little to do with the ickiness factor and everything to do with a story about an apple, a serpent, and a naked man and woman in a perfect world. Let me explain.

The Sole of the Problem
I recently finished reading Born to Run, A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen. To say that it turned everything I thought I knew about running upside down would be an understatement. I literally discovered that things I had just learned about running – and from some of the most accomplished coaches out there – were completely wrong. In fact, some of the lessons people taught me could very well have been contributing to my injuries!

Back to the Cutting Board
There was an inner drive pushing me to get out of bed and use my legs. I think it was the realization that I was finally on the other side of the surgery and for the first time in over four months, I was in a position to start healing! It had been the vision of this moment, after my surgery, that had kept me going all that time. All I had to go on was the promise that I would have my back fixed one day and would be able to start recovering. Now, that moment had arrived. Warning: graphic image of back at end.

7 Ways Running Makes You More Creative
The traits of highly creative people are very similar to the traits of runners. And this is not just a coincidence. In addition to physical benefits, running provides a number of benefits to one’s overall emotional and mental well being, all necessary for creativity.

Viva Las Red Rocks!
Escaping the Strip I attended the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) for three days this past week. What an experience. 120,000 people (mostly men) descend upon Vegas to see the latest gadgets, accessories, appliances, and much more. After a couple of days of trying to navigate the crowds, getting nearly blinded by all the screens and lights, […]

Snowy Creek Trail, Yosemite
A dream come true. For a lucky few, an 11 mile run in the mountains, including 6,000 feet of elevation change and a mile running on snow is normal. For me, this was a very significant event. It was not only the longest run of my life, but more meaningful for me, though, is that a […]

The 5 Elements of Good Barefoot Form
A Means to an End In my mind, running barefoot is a means to an end. And that end is a better running form. A form that leverages what I was born with, reducing the risk of injury and increasing my overall efficiency. But what exactly is a good running form? And how does running without […]

Running Scared
Trying to play to people’s fears in an effort to stop them from being informed will surely fail. Especially when research from none other than Harvard is being published. Trying to combat information with fear doesn’t work for long (one need only look at some previous US administrations to see that). Indeed, the only effective way to go up against information is with credible and convincing counter-information.
